Farm safety: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

28 April, 2023

According to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, 1 in 5 workplace fatalities happen on farms. Farmers should take safety seriously. It can be dangerous when farmers don’t follow safety guidelines and/or forget to wear protective gear – especially when handling chemicals and operating machinery.

To help make a farm a safe workplace setting for everyone, here are a few things to consider:

  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required and/or recommended and keep it in good condition.
  • Set a good example by consistently following safe work practices. Make it clear that anything less than safe is not acceptable.
  • Talk about health and safety regularly with staff so that everyone is on the same page.
  • Encourage workers to speak up if they notice any health and safety concerns.
  • If someone has a health and safety concern, act on it quickly.
  • Ensure regular attendance at safety training sessions.

What PPE can farmers wear?

It’s important for farmers to wear PPE when required and/or recommended. Wearing PPE can mitigate risks and encourage safe work practices on a farm.

PPE comes in many forms, including:

  • hearing protective devices such as earmuffs and plugs
  • respiratory protective equipment such as masks
  • eye and face protection such as safety glasses and shields
  • safety helmets
  • harnesses for working at heights
  • skin protection such as gloves, gauntlets and sunscreen
  • clothing such as high-visibility vests, life jackets and coveralls
  • footwear such as safety boots and rubber boots

Remember that safety is important; think of PPE as another layer of protection to help keep workers safe. It’s also important to keep in mind that although PPE can help prevent injuries and accidents, it’s not a substitute for good workplace practices and safe work procedures.
